To My Daughter, on her first birthday

I know there are many jokes about how by the third child, no one takes pictures or records milestones anymore. And though I learned long before your arrival not to concern myself with silly metrics like height and weight; I have to say that a decade of motherhood has only taught me to record more.

Jot down the words. Take the picture. Count the months. Celebrate the changes.

I know how quickly it all blows away. I only wish I had more moments that I could return to with your brothers. I have never regretted taking the picture.

So, you see, I recorded all the little moments I could in the hazy first days of your life here. I took photos of slow mornings, sunny afternoons, peaceful naps, fun adventures, and tired goodnights. I hit record. I made note of little things you did. Every month I laid out the blocks and snapped the milestone picture.

I know all too well that the days will rush and spill over like a river flooding it’s banks. The years will only roll faster – as a ball set in motion – down the hill from here.

But this is where the analogies fails me, my dear. See… you?

You will go onward and upward.

You will lead a big life. You will be brave in ways I can’t fathom. You will speak wise words. You will see grand sights. You will have bold faith and will fear no man. Your discerning spirit will not be easily swayed. You were born as the world reeled and there are no accidents with God. Your soul arrived right on time.

When I miss these days, I will look back on all the captured light and scribbled words.

But I also look forward to seeing your beautiful calling unfold. I will be there, only as near as you need me to be, with prayers on my lips and love in my eyes.

Happy first birthday, my darling girl.
All my love, from here to eternity,
Your Mama
