That ball came flying into the stands. There was a collective gasp. Heads ducked and little Ezzie scrambled to victory.
Something just as rare as a foul ball landing at one’s feet happened to me today. I crawled into cool sheets in the middle of the afternoon and slept. Not once did my phone ring or ding. It was the only real time I’ve had alone in weeks and was a rare chance to truly rest.
Damon and I were recently talking about a business project we want to work on together. I am eager for it because I know I have the creativity and elbow grease it requires. But I want to say to anyone feeling like many voices are telling them they need to bring an income to the table to “pull weight” or that they aren’t doing enough by serving their family through the daily acts of given love— what you provide is of immeasurable value. If I disappeared tonight, my dear husband would have to hire like five people to cover just the most basic of what I provide. I know that. He knows that. He doesn’t make me feel lesser than just because I do the unseen work.
Whether you decide to work within the home, outside of it, or balance both- I hope you feel valued. I hope you can make that decision for the right reasons and not because someone is making you feel small.
Today I’ve done laundry, dishes, vacuuming, mopping and dusting. I’ve scrubbed a refrigerator, toilets, countertops, and tables. I’ve picked up piles of toys. I’ve sorted books and papers. I gave a seven year old a haircut. But more importantly- I hugged him and told how special he is. I held my baby this morning and celebrated all the ways he’s growing. I prayed my husband would have energy and strength today. Then I wrapped my arms around him and whispered love in his ear. Not one of those things will put my name on a check. But tell me- which one didn’t provide? Which one was a waste of time?
No act of love or service is ever wasted. It’s all important. It’s all life-giving. It’s valuable and worthwhile. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. And don’t apologize for needing a break. Life is so much bigger than any business or busyness. So don’t forget to rest.
