There you are.

Six year old Ezra stands by your side. He’s wearing the hat portion of a monkey costume. We shrugged and smiled when he put it on before heading out the door. Because we know it’s a precious, fleeting time when one can so proudly be a little chimp- caring not one bit what anyone else may think. His spirit teaches us to hold proudly what is ours. We don’t dull our shine to blend, do we? He can’t take his eyes off the pagoda to his left. I call his name hoping to turn his eyes. He continues to stare- upwards and unblinking. Letting the moment win, I snap the picture anyway.

Isaiah, five months old, sits in his stroller. He is bundled in a cozy grey sweater meant to ward off the evening chill that touches only the smallest of us. His cherubic face peeking out from a tiny hood; he stares forward at water pouring over stones and winding down a small hill. He makes tiny noises that go unheard in the symphony surrounding us. Happily pushed along, his eyes gobbling up every sight they land upon. His spirit teaches us to be content. He is happy to simply be with us, needs met, and peacefully taking in beauty. We strive to savor and celebrate the details, don’t we?

And then there is you. Linen wrinkled by wear, hair tousled by breeze. A weary but satisfied half grin on your face. You look right past the camera lens and into my eyes. For a moment, it feels like everything pauses. You’re a good, proud papa. But in that moment you are only mine. A picture freezes that memory. I take a few steps to you and exhale. Your spirit teaches me love. You love fully and selflessly. It is generous and sacrificial. You work and pour out again and again. To see the shine on these boys’ faces. To whisper love to me with your eyes. You worked for this moment.
