We felt it all

F5DE62E4-6C85-4B66-8860-3E5D19ADCE82“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.” – C.S. Lewis

.

Today in an almost continuous flow of movement and water and an ongoing cascade of emotion and memory-

We felt it all.

.

We laughed as Isaiah tried to catch ripples in his hands. We watched a radiant Ezra plunge under, skip through, paddle within, and jump over drops of light and water.

.

In the late afternoon, there was a pause. Ol’ Ruby girl, miles away, a member of our family on four short legs… breathed her last.

.

And we felt it all.

.

Love and vulnerability-

in the joy,

in the catch in your throat,

in the caring,

in the allowing it all to be felt.

.

In watching a baby study the dancing water. In watching a little boy with a grin his face could hardly hold. In remembering all the years that a pup with a bark five times bigger than her legs met me at the door. We felt it all.

.

And when you feel it all- you will be “wrung and possibly broken”. You will feel the particular sadness of the slipping away. But you will also feel the sweet hold of love and the tender grasp of memory.

.

We will love. We will be broken and moved and redeemed. We will feel it all. We will run forward- into the water- hearts bursting.
